Fort Bend County has completed its first U.S. Army Corps of Engineers–led levee inspections, flood preparedness that officials said could save lives, protect property and reduce flood insurance costs for thousands of residents.
More than 25 miles of levees across Levee Improvement Districts have been reviewed, the Fort Bend Levee Coalition said this week.
The inspections, conducted in partnership with the Army Corps, evaluated two major systems that protect more than $10 billion in homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
“It’s a matter of protecting people first,” said Craig Kalkomey, senior project manager at LJA Engineering and associate member of the coalition, during a Fort Bend Chamber event.
Fort Bend County’s Chief Drainage Engineer Mark Vogler also emphasized the role of local districts in emergency response.
“Fort Bend County Levee Districts play a crucial role in the region, serving as key resources during emergencies to provide updates on flood protection and infrastructure status,” he said.
